The word "pixie" conjures images of tiny, ethereal beings flitting through moonlit forests. Originating in the folklore of Devon and Cornwall, pixies (also known as piskies) are a type of fairy, yet they remain distinct from the more regal or dangerous fairies found in other traditions. They are generally described as small humanoids, rarely taller than a few feet, with pointed ears, mischievous grins, and often possessing wings.

Historically, pixies were believed to inhabit ancient burial mounds and wild, hidden places. While the term síde refers to similar spirits in Irish and Scottish Gaelic traditions, the English pixie is a unique regional entity. They were not necessarily seen as benevolent or malevolent, but rather as amoral spirits who enjoyed playing tricks on humans. These pranks could range from leading travelers onto "pixie-led" paths—where one might wander in circles until dawn—to stealing small household items like milk or yarn.

Over time, particularly through Victorian and modern children's literature, the image of the pixie has softened. They are now often portrayed as cute, helpful creatures associated with nature and magic. In popular culture, the word can suggest any tiny, lively, fairy-like being with a playful streak, even when the old folklore is much richer and more specific. However, remnants of their trickster origins remain; even in recent depictions, pixies retain a playful, unpredictable quality.
