Pronunciation

US

  • /ˈpaɪlət/

Description

A pilot is often the person in control of a plane, but the word reaches further than the sky. It can also mean the person guiding a ship, especially through difficult water. In everyday life, "pilot" often describes something tried first on a small scale, like a pilot program that tests an idea before a wider launch.

The same idea appears in entertainment too: a pilot can be the first episode of a show, made to see whether the full series should go ahead. As a verb, to pilot something means to guide it or try it out first. A school might pilot a new class plan, or a team might pilot new software before everyone uses it. Across these uses, the word carries the sense of leading the way and seeing how the journey goes.
