A piazza is, first of all, a public square, especially the main square in an Italian town or city. It is not just an empty patch of open ground. It is usually a place where daily life happens: people meet friends, sit at cafes, cross on their way to work, listen to music, shop at markets, or gather for public events. Historically, piazzas often served as centers for trade, festivals, speeches, and religious celebrations.

When English speakers use the word, they often want more than the plain idea of a "square." They usually mean a place with a strong sense of public life and an Italian or European feel. That is why the word appears so often in travel writing, architecture, and descriptions of famous places such as Piazza San Marco in Venice or Piazza Navona in Rome. In those settings, a piazza is commonly framed by churches, government buildings, palaces, shops, or arcades.

By extension, English can also use piazza for an open plaza, courtyard, or pedestrian area designed in a similar style, even outside Italy. In older or more regional English, especially in historical writing, it can also mean a covered porch, veranda, or colonnaded walkway. That sense is much less common today, but it still appears from time to time.

So when you hear piazza, the main picture to keep in mind is an open public square full of movement and shared life, usually with a clear Italian flavor, though the word can stretch to similar spaces and, in older usage, even to a porch or covered walk.
