Phrenology was a popular 19th-century theory and social movement based on the idea that personality traits, intellectual abilities, and even moral character could be determined by examining the shape and size of bumps on the human skull. The term comes from the Greek words phrēn (mind) and logos (study). Proponents believed the brain was composed of distinct "organs" responsible for specific functions—like courage, cautiousness, or destructiveness—and that these organs would manifest as protrusions on the skull.

Developed by German physician Franz Joseph Gall in the late 18th century, phrenology quickly gained traction across Europe and North America. Phrenologists would carefully map the skull, identifying areas associated with different traits and offering "readings" to people eager to understand themselves or judge others. It was used, and often misused, for a variety of purposes: employers might use it to screen potential hires, educators to categorize students, and people accused of crimes were sometimes judged by their cranial features.

However, phrenology lacked scientific rigor. Its claims were not supported by anatomical evidence, and its methodology was subjective and prone to bias. By the late 19th century, advancements in neuroscience demonstrated that brain function is far more complex than phrenologists believed, leading to the theory's eventual rejection by the scientific community.

Today, phrenology is considered a pseudoscience—a belief presented as scientific but lacking evidence.
