A phrenologist was someone who practiced phrenology—a now-discredited theory asserting that personality traits and mental abilities are determined by the shape of the skull. Developed by Franz Joseph Gall in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, phrenology proposed that different areas of the brain were responsible for specific characteristics, and these areas would cause corresponding bumps on the scalp. A phrenologist would carefully feel a person's head, mapping out these "bumps" to create a detailed psychological profile.

For a time, phrenology was surprisingly popular. It influenced fields like education (the belief that certain skull shapes indicated aptitude for learning) and criminology (the attempt to identify criminals based on their physical features). Phrenologists often gave public demonstrations, offering "readings" of individuals' characters for a fee.

However, the scientific basis of phrenology was flawed from the start. Later research in neurology demonstrated that brain function is far more complex and not directly tied to skull shape. By the late 19th century, it had largely fallen into disuse and is now considered a pseudoscience—a belief presented as scientific but lacking empirical evidence.

Today, you're unlikely to encounter an actual phrenologist practicing their trade. However, the term often appears in historical fiction or when discussing the history of psychology and flawed scientific theories. It serves as a fascinating example of how easily people can be misled by seemingly logical—yet ultimately incorrect—ideas about the human mind.
