phone

A1
verbnoun

Pronunciation

UK

  • /fˈəʊn/

US

  • /ˈfoʊn/

Description

Once upon a time, if you wanted to speak to someone far away, you needed a phone with wires that carried your voice to someone else. Now the word is used in a much wider way. It can still mean a traditional landline, but more often it means a mobile phone or smartphone, a small device that lets you call, text, use the internet, and do many other things.

Think of it like this: older ones were mainly for talking, but modern ones help you stay connected in many ways. You might phone your grandmother for a chat, but you may also use your phone to take photos, find your way in a new city, or order dinner. The verb "to phone" simply means to call someone.
