"Peripherally" describes something existing on the edges or being connected to something else in an indirect way. It suggests a lack of central involvement; you are not at the core of things, but rather around the outside. Think of seeing something using your peripheral vision—you notice movement and shapes, but not with the full clarity of your direct gaze.

The word comes from "periphery," meaning the outer part or boundary of something. If someone is aware of a situation peripherally, they have some knowledge of it but are not directly involved in its main events. For example: "She was peripherally involved in the project, offering advice when asked but not taking on any major responsibilities."

It is often used to describe how information reaches someone; perhaps you heard about a scandal peripherally through friends of friends. Or, a business might be affected peripherally by changes in government policy that target a different industry.

While the word is frequently used to describe abstract relationships, awareness, or involvement, it can also describe physical noticing, as when you see something peripherally out of the corner of your eye. In any context, it implies some degree of distance and a lack of direct focus. A politician might refer peripherally to a minor issue during a speech to acknowledge it without making it the main topic.
