Perihelion originates from the Greek roots peri (near) and helios (sun), describing the point in the orbit of any celestial body where it is closest to the Sun. While we most often discuss Earth's perihelion, every planet, asteroid, and comet follows this principle. It is a fundamental concept in astronomy and orbital mechanics.
Earth reaches perihelion each year around January 3rd or 4th. At this point, it is approximately 91.4 million miles from the Sun—about 3% closer than its average distance. A common misconception is that this proximity causes summer; however, for the Northern Hemisphere, perihelion actually occurs during the dead of winter! The seasons are driven by Earth's axial tilt, not its distance from the Sun. Nonetheless, perihelion does slightly affect the intensity of solar radiation hitting the planet at that time.
The term applies to all objects in our solar system. For example, a comet with a highly eccentric (stretched-out) orbit will have a very dramatic perihelion, sometimes swinging incredibly close to the Sun's surface before heading back into the cold depths of space. Understanding perihelion is crucial for calculating trajectories and predicting the behavior of everything from space probes to passing meteoroids.
