perfunctory

C2
adjective

Pronunciation

UK

  • /pəfˈʌŋktərˌi/

US

  • /pərˈfəŋktəri/

Description

Imagine a robot programmed to greet people. It might offer a perfunctory "Hello" in the exact same tone every time, with no real warmth. That is the feeling of perfunctory: something done because it has to be done, not because the person truly cares.

A perfunctory apology feels empty. A perfunctory search for lost keys is quick and not very careful. The word is often used when someone is just going through the motions and giving only the minimum effort.
