The term "overprint" refers to printing additional material on top of something that has already been printed. You can use it as a verb, for the act of adding that new layer, or as a noun, for the added text, number, symbol, or design itself. The key idea is simple: there is an original printed surface first, and then another printed element is placed over it.

Historically, overprints were often used on postage stamps during times of political change or shifts in value. A new government might overprint old stamps with a new country name, symbol, or price instead of printing completely new ones right away.
