overgeneralization

Overgeneralization is a way of thinking in which we draw broad conclusions from too little evidence. It is a common thinking error that happens when we take a small number of examples and apply them to a whole group, situation, or pattern. Think of it like painting with too broad a brush: the picture may look simple, but it leaves out important details and creates mistakes.

This is not always intentional. Our brains naturally look for patterns, and sometimes we see them where they are not really there. For example, if someone meets two rude people from a particular city, they might decide that everyone from that city is rude. Or after a few rainy days in April, someone might say, "It always rains in April!"

This kind of thinking becomes especially harmful when it leads to stereotypes or prejudice. Assuming that all members of a group share the same traits ignores individual differences and leads to unfair judgments. In science and research, people try to avoid this mistake by using careful samples and proper testing.

However, generalization itself is not always bad. Some general ideas are useful because they are based on strong evidence, such as knowing that fire is generally hot. The important difference is knowing the limits of a claim and avoiding absolute statements. When we notice this habit in our own thinking, we can think more clearly and make fairer, more accurate judgments about the world.
