To overexpose something means to subject it to too much light, reveal too much about it, or give it more attention than is helpful, often with negative results. The word first came from photography, where it describes what happens when too much light reaches film or a digital sensor, leaving the image too bright and washed out. Over time, the meaning expanded beyond photography.

In photography, an overexposed photo loses detail because the brightest parts turn nearly or completely white: "The photographer overexposed the shot, and the sunset became a harsh white glare." Today, people also use "overexpose" in a figurative way. Someone might overexpose a plan by talking about it too openly, or overexpose private matters by sharing more than they should. In modern media, people often say a celebrity is overexposed when they appear so often in the news, ads, or social media that the public starts to lose interest.

The key idea is excess. Something is given more light, more exposure, or more attention than it can handle well. The result is usually loss: loss of detail in a photo, loss of privacy in personal matters, or loss of appeal when a person or idea is seen too often. Think of it as keeping a spotlight on something for too long. Whether you are using a camera or choosing what to share with others, the word suggests that too much visibility can do harm.
