overbalance

To overbalance usually means to lose balance because weight or movement goes too far in one direction. The picture behind the word is simple: something is steady for a moment, then it tips past the safe point and falls. A person reaching too far from a ladder may overbalance. A stack of boxes may overbalance if one side becomes heavier than the other. In this core sense, the word is about physical instability.

The verb can also be used transitively for causing that loss of balance. A sudden pull might overbalance someone. An uneven load might overbalance a cart. This use keeps the same basic idea: one side gains too much weight or force, and the whole thing tips.

There is also an older and more formal sense in which overbalance means "outweigh" or "more than make up for." In that use, one factor is stronger than another. For example, the comfort of home might overbalance the trouble of a long journey. That meaning still makes sense, but in everyday English the physical sense of tipping or losing balance is the clearer and more common one.
