To overact means to perform, whether on stage or in everyday life, with too much exaggeration and too little natural feeling. It suggests that someone is trying too hard to show emotion, and the result often feels forced, unconvincing, or melodramatic.

Originally, "overact" referred mainly to stage or screen performances in which an actor lacked subtlety and pushed the emotion too far. Think of a villain with a booming voice and wildly flailing arms. It may grab attention, but it can quickly feel excessive if it is not balanced with control.

However, the term is also used more broadly now. We can use it for people in daily life when their behavior feels exaggerated, theatrical, or showy. If someone bursts into tears over a spilled glass of milk or throws a tantrum because they did not get their way, you might say they are overacting. The idea is not just that the reaction is big, but that it feels performed.

The key element is not necessarily feeling strong emotions, but showing them in an artificial or excessive way.
