The word "other" is simple, but it does a lot of work. At its core, "other" points to a person or thing that is different from the one already mentioned, the one already known, or the one closest at hand. In many cases, it is close in meaning to "different," "more," or "the remaining one." Think about a pair of shoes: if you lose one, you're left with the other.

"Other" is most often used before a noun or by itself in place of a noun. Before a noun, it describes something different or additional: you might read other stories, visit other cities, or ask if there is any other help available. In these cases, it helps widen the picture beyond the first thing being discussed.

By itself, other or others can stand for the remaining person, thing, or group. If two children are sharing toys, one may choose a car and the other may choose a truck. If several people arrive at different times, you can say, "Some came early, others arrived late." In this use, the word helps divide a group into parts without repeating the full noun each time.

"Other" can also suggest contrast more broadly. We speak of other ideas, other cultures, or other ways of living when we want to look beyond our own. In some serious writing, people may refer to "the other" to talk about someone seen as separate from the main group. That is a special use, and it often appears in discussions about society, identity, or exclusion.

The word also appears in set phrases. "Other than" often means "except for" or "different from": "I don't need anything other than water," or "Her answer was other than helpful." "Every other" means every second one in a series, and "one after the other" shows sequence.

So whether you're talking about the remaining glove, extra choices, everyone else in a group, or a different way of seeing things, "other" is a basic English word for moving beyond the first example and pointing to what is different, additional, or left.
