"Ostensive" describes something that works through direct demonstration or through a visible example. Instead of relying on a full verbal definition, an ostensive approach makes meaning clear by showing the thing itself. To define "crimson" ostensively, you would not start with light waves or color theory; you would simply point to a ripe strawberry or a deep red rose.

The term is especially important in philosophy and in the study of language learning. It often appears in discussions of how people connect words to the world around them. A child may learn the word "dog" because someone points to a dog and says the word aloud. That kind of learning is often described as ostensive because the meaning is built through direct demonstration. In the same way, an ostensive definition teaches by indicating an example rather than by listing features in formal language.

In linguistics, logic, and communication, the word can describe acts that openly indicate what is meant. A pointed finger, a teacher holding up an object, or a speaker saying "that one" while indicating a specific thing can all be called ostensive in nature.
