The term "orbiter" comes from the idea of orbiting, or moving around something under the force of gravity. In its main and most literal sense, it refers to a spacecraft designed to stay in orbit around a planet, moon, asteroid, or another body in space rather than land on it. Unlike landers or rovers, which go down to the surface, an orbiter stays above it so it can observe the body over time, take images, study weather or terrain, and sometimes relay signals. Famous examples include the Lunar Orbiter program of the 1960s, which helped map the Moon for the Apollo missions, as well as later spacecraft such as Cassini at Saturn and Juno at Jupiter.

In the digital age, the word has also become a casual term in social media and dating culture. In this sense, an orbiter is a person who seems to "hover" around someone else. They might regularly view your Instagram stories or like your posts but never start a real conversation or build a real relationship. The comparison to space is easy to see: they stay close enough to notice you, but they remain at a distance.
