The word orbital fundamentally relates to an orbit: the path an object follows around a central body. Most famously, we think of planets in orbital motion around stars like our Sun. These paths are shaped by gravity and follow the laws of physics. In the same way, a satellite is launched into a specific orbital path around Earth so it can support communication, weather tracking, navigation, or scientific research.

However, the term extends far beyond astronomy. In chemistry, an atomic orbital is the region around an atom's nucleus where an electron is most likely to be found. In anatomy, orbital means related to the eye socket, also called the orbit. The word can also be used for roads: an orbital road or motorway goes around a city instead of cutting through the middle.

Less often, orbital can be used more loosely for a repeating pattern that seems to circle back on itself. Whether you are gazing at the stars, studying chemistry, learning anatomy, or navigating a city, orbital usually points back to the same core idea: movement around a center or something closely connected to that kind of path.
