Opioids are a class of drugs that interact with opioid receptors in the brain, reducing the perception of pain. The story begins with opium, harvested from the poppy plant for thousands of years. For centuries, it was used medicinally but also carried risks of dependence. The word itself carries a weight now – it's not just about pain relief, but also about risk, dependence, and the urgent need for solutions.
