Oligarchy describes a form of government where power is held by a small, elite group of people—often wealthy families, powerful corporations, or military leaders. The word comes from the Greek oligos (few) and arkhos (ruler). Unlike a democracy, where citizens have a voice in decision-making, an oligarchy prioritizes the interests of this select group above all others.

While it sounds straightforward, oligarchies can be surprisingly subtle. It's not always about obvious tyranny or military force. Sometimes, power is maintained through economic control—by owning key industries and influencing policy to benefit private interests. Other times, it is achieved through social networks and exclusive access to political circles.

Historically, many ancient Greek city-states experimented with oligarchic systems. In modern times, the term is often used critically to describe situations where wealth and power are heavily concentrated, leading to inequality and limited opportunities for ordinary citizens. You might hear concerns about "oligarchs"—extremely wealthy individuals who wield significant political influence—in contexts ranging from post-Soviet Russia to debates about corporate influence in Western politics.

It's important to note that pure oligarchies are rare. Most governments exist on a spectrum, with elements of different systems mixed together. However, when power becomes overwhelmingly concentrated in the hands of a few, it raises concerns about fairness, accountability, and the health of democracy. So, while not always wearing a crown, an oligarchy is a system where the "few" call the shots.
