A junta is a committee or council that exercises political control over a country, typically after seizing power through a military coup d'état. It is more than just a group of people in charge; it specifically implies a government led by the armed forces, often replacing a civilian administration by force.

The term comes from Spanish and Portuguese, originally meaning simply "meeting" or "committee." However, over time, especially during the 20th century, its meaning in English became strongly linked to undemocratic regimes set up through military action. In some contexts, it can also mean a small group that controls an organization or acts behind the scenes, but that use is much less common today than the political one.

Juntas often suspend constitutions, dissolve parliaments, and restrict civil liberties. They frequently justify their actions by claiming they are restoring order or protecting national interests, but these claims are often met with international skepticism due to the lack of democratic processes.

Historically, juntas have appeared in parts of Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Notable examples include the military government that ruled Myanmar (Burma) for decades and the juntas that governed Argentina during periods of intense political turmoil. The word usually carries a strong negative tone, suggesting authoritarian rule and the suppression of dissent. When you encounter "junta," think first of power seized by force and a government controlled by high-ranking military officers.
