Objectification occurs when a person is treated as a mere instrument, or an object, rather than as a fully realized human being with their own thoughts, feelings, and agency. It's more than just attraction; it involves reducing someone to a collection of physical attributes or functional qualities, stripping away their inherent worth and individuality.

Historically, the term gained prominence in feminist theory, where it was used to analyze how women are often depicted and treated in patriarchal societies—frequently reduced to their bodies for the male gaze and pleasure. However, objectification isn't limited to gender; anyone can be objectified based on any perceived characteristic, such as age, race, or ability.

Objectification manifests in many ways: through sexualization, commodification (treating someone like a product), controlling behavior, or simply ignoring someone's opinions and experiences. You might see it in advertising that uses bodies to sell products, in the media's focus on celebrities' appearances over their accomplishments, or even in everyday interactions where someone is dismissed because of their looks.

The consequences of objectification can be significant, leading to feelings of shame, anxiety, depression, and a diminished sense of self-worth. It reinforces harmful power dynamics and perpetuates inequality. Recognizing objectification, both when it happens to others and when we might unintentionally contribute to it, is the first step toward fostering more respectful and equitable interactions. For example, commenting on a colleague's appearance instead of their contribution at work can be an act of objectification. Similarly, reducing someone's value solely to their job title or physical abilities is also a form of objectification.
