The word numen comes from Latin and refers to a divine power, will, or presiding spirit. In Roman religion, it often meant the active power of a god or the sacred presence felt in a place, person, or object. It is more specific than a general sense of "spirituality." The word points to divine force at work, sometimes without focusing on a fully human-like god with a detailed personality.

Think about standing in a grove, at a shrine, or beside an ancient spring and feeling that the place is charged with sacred power. That gets close to the meaning of numen. The word is tied first to religion, especially Roman religion, but in modern writing it can also describe an atmosphere of divine mystery or a strong sacred presence.

Romans spoke of the numen of a god, and later also of the numen of an emperor, meaning the divine authority or sacred force connected with that being. The plural form, numina, was used for such divine powers. A person might pray at a holy spring, honor the numen of a place, or ask for the favor of a god whose power watched over a field, a household, or a journey.

Today, the word appears mostly in discussions of Roman history, religion, mythology, and sometimes literature. Modern writers may use it more loosely for an intangible sense of sacredness or divine power, but that older religious meaning is still at its core. So if a writer says a ruined temple, an old forest, or a mountain has a numen, the idea is not just that it is beautiful or moving, but that it seems to hold a real sacred presence.
