To be numb means to experience a loss of sensation, whether physical or emotional. Physically, numbness can occur when blood flow is restricted, like when your foot "goes to sleep" after you sit on it the wrong way for too long. It's that tingling, deadened feeling where you can't fully feel touch, temperature, or pain. "After hours in the cold, his fingers were numb and clumsy."

But "numb" goes far beyond just physical sensations. It often describes an emotional state—a detachment from feelings, a sense of being emotionally paralyzed. This kind of numbness can be a coping mechanism for dealing with trauma, grief, or overwhelming stress. Someone might say, "She felt numb after receiving the bad news," meaning she was unable to process her emotions and felt disconnected from reality.

The word can also be used metaphorically to describe a lack of responsiveness or empathy. "The politician seemed numb to the suffering of his constituents," suggests he lacked compassion or understanding.
