A nosebleed, medically called epistaxis, is any bleeding that starts inside the nose. It is very common, and many people have at least one during their lives. The inside of the nose has many tiny blood vessels close to the surface, so they can break and bleed quite easily.

There are two main types of nosebleeds: anterior (front) and posterior (back). Anterior nosebleeds, which account for about 90% of cases, originate from the front part of the nose and are usually easier to manage. They're often caused by dry air, nose picking, minor injuries, or allergies. Posterior nosebleeds occur deeper within the nose and tend to be more severe, often requiring medical attention.

While a sudden flow of blood can be alarming, most nosebleeds are not a reason to panic. Simple first aid - pinching the soft part of your nose just below the bony bridge for 10-15 minutes while leaning forward - usually works well. However, if the bleeding is heavy, lasts longer than 20 minutes even with pressure, or happens after a serious injury, it is important to get medical help. Frequent nosebleeds can sometimes point to another health problem, such as high blood pressure or a blood-clotting disorder, so it is wise to speak with a doctor in those cases.

So, while a nosebleed can be upsetting in the moment, understanding its causes and knowing what to do can make it feel much more manageable. Even something that looks dramatic often has a simple cause and a simple solution.
