The word "nonviolent" describes actions, behavior, or methods that avoid physical force and do not aim to hurt people. At the most basic level, it means "not violent," but in real use it often carries a deeper meaning. It can describe an active choice to respond to conflict, injustice, or political struggle in a peaceful way. It is not simply passive or weak. In many cases, it involves courage, discipline, and a strong decision not to cause harm, even under pressure.

Historically, the idea of nonviolence has deep roots in several religious and philosophical traditions, including Buddhism, Jainism, and Christianity. In the 20th century, it became especially well known through leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, who used satyagraha as part of India's independence movement, and Martin Luther King Jr., who supported nonviolent resistance during the American Civil Rights Movement.

"Nonviolent" can describe many things: a nonviolent protest, a nonviolent demonstration, a nonviolent campaign, or even a nonviolent way of speaking to others. It often suggests methods such as peaceful marches, civil disobedience, boycotts, negotiation, and public education instead of fighting or physical attack.

Still, being nonviolent is not always easy. It can require strong self-control when facing anger, threat, or injustice, and it may involve real personal sacrifice. For many people, though, it is a powerful and moral way to seek change. So when you hear "nonviolent," think beyond simply not fighting. Think of choosing peace on purpose in order to respond to conflict or bring about change.
