Imagine a talented baker who makes incredible cakes for friends and family but does not sell them as a business. That is nonprofessional baking. "Nonprofessional" describes something done by someone who is not working in that field as a paid job. It often contrasts with "professional" and usually suggests an amateur, hobby, or volunteer role. You might join a nonprofessional theater group for fun, or enter a nonprofessional photography contest meant for people who do not earn money from that work. A person can still be skilled, but the main idea is that it is not their profession.
