Description

Imagine dropping a pebble into still water—the ripples spread out in predictable circles. That's linear behavior. Now imagine throwing a rock: splashes, overlapping waves, and hard-to-predict patterns appear. That's nonlinearity. It describes cases where cause and effect are not proportional; a small change can have a huge result, and a bigger input does not always lead to a neatly bigger output. You can see it in weather, markets, and even the rhythm of your heart.

It isn't necessarily bad—it often creates rich and interesting behavior. A musician might use nonlinear effects on a guitar to create a unique sound. A biologist may study it in population growth to understand how ecosystems change over time.
