The word nome comes from the Ancient Greek nomos and is the historical term used for the administrative divisions of ancient Egypt. For more than 3,000 years, from roughly 3100 BC to the end of the Ptolemaic period in 30 BC, Egypt was organized into these regions. There were traditionally 42 nomes, 22 in Upper Egypt and 20 in Lower Egypt, though the exact number and their boundaries changed over time as the Nile shifted and political systems changed.

Each nome was more than a line on a map; it was a local unit with its own identity. Each had its own god or goddess, and each had a main city that served as its administrative and economic center. Local governors, known as nomarchs, oversaw the affairs of their nomes by collecting taxes, managing the Nile's irrigation systems, and keeping order.

Understanding nomes is important if you want to understand ancient Egyptian history, because they were the basic building blocks of the kingdom's political structure. During times of instability, often called the Intermediate Periods, the central power of the pharaoh could weaken, and some nomes became almost like small independent states. Archaeologists also study the symbols and features of individual nomes to build a clearer picture of daily life and regional differences. So while you would not use nome for a modern neighborhood or state, it remains an important word in writing about the world of the pharaohs.
