neutralist

A neutralist is a person who supports neutrality, especially in political, military, or international matters. Rather than simply seeming fair or unbiased, a neutralist usually takes the position that a person, group, or nation should stay out of other people's conflicts and should not join one side against another. The word comes from "neutrality," and it often suggests a deliberate choice not to align.

Historically, "neutralism" became especially important during the Cold War in the mid-20th century. In that context, it referred to the idea that a nation should avoid joining either major power bloc, whether led by the United States or the Soviet Union. A neutralist might defend that path by saying that independence and peace matter more than choosing a camp in a global rivalry.

The word can also be used more broadly for someone who does not want to take sides in a dispute. Even then, it usually carries the sense of choosing distance or non-involvement, not just being fair-minded. That is why it is not the best word for every impartial person. A judge, scientist, or referee is more often called impartial or unbiased, while a neutralist is more often someone who believes neutrality itself is the right course.

So in real use, the word often appears in discussions of war, diplomacy, foreign policy, or public disagreements where one side refuses to join another. For example: "He remained a neutralist during the border dispute, arguing that his country should not support either side," or, "The party's neutralist position kept it away from military alliances." In short, a neutralist is not just someone who seems objective. It is usually someone who believes that staying neutral is the wiser path.
