The word "partisan" has long been used for a person who strongly supports one side in a conflict, argument, or political struggle. Today, it most often refers to strong loyalty to a political party, group, or cause, especially when that loyalty affects fairness or judgment. A partisan news source, for example, presents information in a way that favors one side and gives less weight to the other.

Being partisan is not always bad. People naturally support ideas and groups they believe in, and strong support can sometimes help bring change. But extreme partisanship can also lead to division, intolerance, and a refusal to compromise. It becomes a problem when loyalty matters more than fairness or facts. You might say, "The debate was marred by partisan attacks," meaning the arguments were driven more by loyalty and bias than by evidence.

Historically, a "partisan" could also refer to a member of an irregular military group, often fighting in occupied territory or behind enemy lines. These fighters usually worked in small groups rather than as part of a regular army. That sense still carries the same basic idea of siding strongly with a cause and acting in support of it.

So whether you are talking about politics, history, or public debate, "partisan" describes strong loyalty to one side. Depending on the situation, that loyalty can look like commitment and courage, or like bias and unfairness.
