Nativism is a political ideology that emphasizes the interests of native-born inhabitants over those of immigrants. It's more than just simple xenophobia (fear of foreigners); nativism actively asserts that natives are superior and deserve priority in areas like jobs, politics, and cultural identity. The term itself comes from the idea of being "native" to a place—born there, with deep roots in its history and traditions.

Historically, nativist movements have emerged in many countries throughout the world, often during periods of significant immigration or economic downturn. These movements frequently express anxieties about immigrants "taking jobs," undermining cultural values, or posing a threat to national security. In the United States, nativism has been a recurring theme. The Know-Nothing Party of the mid-19th century opposed Irish Catholic immigration, fearing their loyalty lay with the Pope rather than the US government. In the early 20th century, restrictions were placed on immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe based on nativist beliefs about racial superiority. Even today, debates surrounding immigration policy often contain elements of nativism, whether explicitly stated or subtly implied.

Beyond politics, nativism also carries a distinct meaning in psychology and philosophy. In these fields, it is the theory that certain concepts, mental capacities, or structures are innate rather than acquired through learning or experience. For example, the theory that humans are born with a biological "hard-wiring" for language is a nativist perspective.

Whether discussed in the context of political exclusion or the "nature versus nurture" debate, nativism centers on what is perceived as being "built-in" or original to a person or a place. Recognizing these different layers helps us understand how the word functions across different disciplines—from the halls of government to the study of the human mind.
