Description

"Native" has a beautiful range of meanings, all rooted in the idea of origin. Think about your first language—the one you spoke at home as a child. That is your native tongue, the one that feels most natural to you. Most often, "native" describes someone born in a particular place. A person might be a native New Yorker, meaning they were born in the city.

However, it goes beyond people. Plants and animals that naturally belong to an area can also be described this way, like the native wildflowers blooming in a prairie. Something inherent or natural to a person can also be described as native; for instance, a native ability is one you are born with rather than one you learn through experience. Whether it is about birthplace, belonging, or inherent qualities, "native" speaks to what is original and fundamental.
