Description

"Nan" is a small word with a few very different uses. Most often, it is a warm, informal name for a grandmother, especially in British English. You may also see it as a variant spelling of "naan," the soft, leavened flatbread served with South Asian food. In computing, "NaN" means "Not a Number," a special result that appears when a calculation does not produce a real numeric value. Context is what tells you which meaning is intended.

Think of it this way: your Nan might serve you warm garlic nan with dinner, but if you divide a number by zero in some computer systems, the result may come back as NaN.
