Mortar is most commonly known as the paste-like substance used in construction to bind building materials like bricks, blocks, and stones. Think of it as the thick glue that keeps a wall standing! It's typically made from a mixture of cement, sand, and water—though ancient versions often included lime, clay, or even volcanic ash. A strong mortar is crucial for creating durable buildings, as it seals the gaps against the elements.

However, "mortar" has two other distinct lives. First, it refers to a sturdy, bowl-shaped vessel—often made of stone, ceramic, or wood—used for crushing and grinding substances. This is almost always paired with a "pestle," a club-shaped tool. For centuries, apothecaries used them to prepare medicines, and chefs still use them today to release the deep flavors of herbs and spices.

Finally, in a military context, a mortar is a short-barreled weapon that fires shells at relatively low speed but on a very high arc. Unlike a standard cannon that fires in a more direct line, a mortar lobs shells upward so they can drop onto targets behind walls, hills, or other cover.

The word itself comes from the Old French "mortier," which originally referred to both the builder's plaster and the bowl used for mixing or grinding. No matter the context, the word "mortar" always implies something heavy, grounded, and essential.
