The word "militarize" describes the process of increasing military power, presence, or influence. It is not just about adding more soldiers. It can also mean preparing for war, placing an area under stronger military control, or changing a civilian group or system so it uses military-style equipment, training, or organization.

Historically, militarization has often meant strengthening border defenses, building fortifications, and increasing troop numbers because conflict seems possible. For example, increasing the military presence near the Korean Demilitarized Zone between North Korea and South Korea would be described as militarization.

However, "militarize" is not limited to national defense. It can also describe a broader shift toward military methods or military control in areas that are usually civilian. We hear about the "militarization of space" when countries develop military systems for use in orbit. Another common example is the "militarization of police," which refers to giving law enforcement military-grade equipment and training. This often raises concerns about excessive force and weaker trust between communities and authorities.

The term is sometimes used more loosely in figurative writing, but its core meaning stays close to armed force, military preparation, or military influence. In most real uses, militarization implies a stronger focus on strength, control, and readiness for conflict. It is a weighty word, and it often suggests that something has shifted in a more forceful or defensive direction.
