A midden (pronounced mid-uhn) is essentially an accumulation of cultural debris: garbage, waste materials, and discarded objects that have been deposited in a specific location over time. While we often think of "trash" as something to be hidden away, middens were often a familiar part of daily life in many cultures throughout history.

Historically, middens were not always haphazard dumps. In some societies, they were carefully built and even served as landmarks or ritual spaces. Coastal communities often created shell middens from the discarded remains of shellfish eaten over generations. Inland settlements might have middens containing animal bones, ash from hearths, and broken pottery. For archaeologists, these layers are invaluable; by excavating them, they can reconstruct past diets, trade patterns, social hierarchies, and even ancient environmental conditions.

The term extends beyond human history as well. In biology, a midden refers to the debris piles created by animals, such as octopuses or pack rats. A pack rat midden, for example, can preserve plant matter for thousands of years, helping scientists understand how local ecosystems have changed. In some English dialects, "midden" still refers quite simply to a dunghill or a domestic refuse heap near a dwelling.

Whether it is an ancient mound of oyster shells or a modern-day biological deposit, a midden is more than just waste; it is a vital window into the behavior and survival of the creatures—human or otherwise—that left it behind.
