A dunghill is a heap of dung, manure, and often other refuse, usually found on a farm or near a place where waste was thrown out. In the most literal sense, it is simply a pile of animal waste and rubbish. Before modern waste systems, such heaps were a common part of everyday life in both rural areas and some towns. They were filthy and unpleasant, but they could also be practical, since rotted manure could later be used to enrich the soil.
