Historically, mezzanines were common in large buildings like factories and warehouses because they created extra space for storage or offices without the cost of building a complete new story. Today, they are also common in modern architecture and interior design, where they help create open, tall spaces while still adding usable room above. You may find them in theaters, museums, libraries, retail stores, and loft-style homes. In theaters, the word can also refer to the seating level above the orchestra.

The term can also appear in specialized contexts. In finance, for example, "mezzanine" can describe a form of financing that sits between debt and equity. Even there, the idea is similar: it suggests something in the middle. Most of the time, though, the word refers to that in-between level in a building, raised above the main floor but still open to the space below.
