- A teacher explaining the concept of irony: The teacher is using language (an explanation) to define another linguistic device (irony).
- Metalanguages in computing: In computer science, a metalanguage (such as BNF) is used to describe the syntax and rules of other languages in a formal way.
- The "Definitions" section of a legal contract: This section uses precise language to define exactly how specific terms must be interpreted within the document, creating a specialized "language" for that agreement.
The key idea is that metalanguage operates on a different level from the "object language" it describes.
