The word "materiel" has roots in Old French and is closely related to "material." Over time, it came to refer not to raw substance, but to the equipment, supplies, and other physical means needed for an operation. Today, it is used most often in military language, where it refers to the weapons, vehicles, ammunition, medical supplies, communications gear, and other support items a force needs to function.

It's important to distinguish "materiel" from "material." "Material" usually means the substance something is made of, such as wood, metal, or fabric. "Materiel," by contrast, refers to the usable equipment and supplies themselves. A factory may work with raw materials like steel and rubber, but an army depends on materiel such as trucks, radios, tents, and artillery built from those substances.

You'll most often encounter "materiel" in military or government contexts: "The defense budget allocates funds for new materiel," or "Logistical problems slowed the delivery of vital materiel to the front lines." It can also appear in other formal uses, such as "instructional materiel," meaning the books, tools, and media used in teaching, though "materials" is more common there.

Think of it this way: if you're building a house, the wood, nails, and shingles are materials. But the trucks, power tools, safety gear, and fuel that let the work go forward are the materiel behind the operation. When you hear "materiel," picture the full set of practical equipment and supplies that keeps a mission moving.
