"Masochistic" is a word rooted in psychology, but it also appears often in everyday language. At its core, it describes a tendency to take pleasure in pain, suffering, or humiliation, whether that pain is physical, emotional, or mental. The term is named after Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, a writer whose work explored the uneasy line between pleasure and pain.

Historically, the term was strongly linked to sexual behavior involving the enjoyment of pain. But the word is also used more broadly. A person might keep choosing partners who mistreat them, create problems that make life harder, or return again and again to situations that leave them hurt or unhappy. In that wider sense, the word suggests more than simple bad luck; it suggests an attraction to suffering itself.

It is important to separate occasional self-destructive behavior from a deeper pattern. Everyone makes bad choices sometimes. But when someone repeatedly seems to prefer hardship, or to find some satisfaction in discomfort, the word "masochistic" may fit.
