Maladaptation refers to a trait, feature, behavior, or response that hurts survival, success, or well-being instead of helping it. At its core, it describes a bad fit between a living thing, a person, or a system and the conditions around it. Evolution usually favors adaptations, or traits that improve survival, but a harmful mismatch can appear when circumstances change or when a response works badly in the first place.
In biology, this often happens after rapid environmental change. A thick fur coat is a strong advantage in the Arctic, but it can become a serious problem if the climate warms too quickly for the species to adjust. In other cases, a harmful trait may come from a genetic change or a developmental problem, such as a prey animal being born with features that make it easier for predators to notice.
However, the term is not limited to the natural world. It is also used for patterns of behavior, policies, or systems that do not adjust well to new conditions and end up making things worse. A political system that cannot respond to changing social needs can be described this way. In psychology, "maladaptive behaviors" are harmful ways of coping with stress, fear, or trauma. They may bring short-term relief, but they create bigger problems over time. The key idea is that this is more than simply not adapting well. It means that the trait, habit, or response actively causes trouble instead of offering real help.
