The term "lysogenic" usually describes a virus, especially a bacteriophage, that enters the lysogenic cycle after infecting a host cell. Unlike the lytic cycle, which leads to rapid viral reproduction and the destruction of the host cell, the lysogenic cycle is marked by the viral genetic material becoming part of the host's genome. In bacteria, this integrated viral DNA is called a prophage. In animal cells, a similar idea exists and the integrated viral DNA is often called a provirus, though "lysogenic" is used most strictly for phages.

The process is remarkably subtle. After the virus injects its genetic material, that DNA becomes a stable part of the host's own genetic code. Every time the host cell divides, it copies the viral DNA along with its own, passing it on to daughter cells without causing immediate damage. This quiet infection can continue for many generations, allowing the virus to remain in the population without being noticed right away.

However, this calm state is often temporary. Under certain stress conditions, such as UV radiation, chemical damage, or lack of nutrients, the prophage can be induced. When that happens, the viral DNA leaves its quiet state and enters the lytic cycle, where it directs the production of many new viruses and often leads to the death of the host cell.

Lysogeny is an important concept in microbiology because it helps explain how viruses can remain in a host population for long periods without causing immediate destruction. It also shows how phages can affect bacterial evolution by moving genes between cells, sometimes changing traits such as toxin production or resistance. Understanding the lysogenic cycle is useful in studying bacteria, viruses, and the ways genetic material can spread through living systems.
