A lioness is the female lion, and she often plays a central role in the pride. Lionesses do most of the hunting, working together to stalk and catch prey and bring food to the group. They also care for and protect their cubs, showing both strength and patience. While male lions often defend territory and face outside threats, lionesses usually do most of the hunting. Much of a pride's food depends on the skill and coordination of its lionesses.

Beyond hunting, lionesses are devoted mothers. They usually give birth to one to four cubs and nurse and protect them during their first months of life. Cubs stay close to their mother and learn basic survival skills from her as they grow. Lionesses also form strong social bonds and often help care for the pride's young together, not only their own cubs.
