Lint refers to the short fibers that come loose from textiles – things like cotton, wool, linen, or synthetic fabrics. It's essentially tiny pieces of material shed during wear, washing, or simply through friction. You see it accumulating on clothing, furniture, and in places where fabric rubs together.

The word "lint" has a surprisingly long history! Originally, it referred to flax fibers used for making linen cloth. Over time, its meaning broadened to encompass any fluffy debris from textiles. In the past, lint was even collected and used as padding or tinder – a practical use for something we now mostly consider a nuisance.

Today, we most often encounter lint as an unwanted byproduct of fabric care. It clings to dark clothing, accumulates in pockets, and forms those infamous dust bunnies under furniture. Dryers are notorious lint traps, requiring regular cleaning to prevent fire hazards.

But lint isn't always bad. In some contexts, it can be a sign of quality – the shedding of natural fibers like cotton is often seen as preferable to the lack of visible wear on synthetic materials. And artists sometimes even use lint in their creations! So while we might spend time trying to get rid of it, lint is an unavoidable part of our textile world—a tiny reminder of the constant cycle of creation and decay.
