linearize

To linearize something means to turn it into a linear form. Very often, this means replacing something curved, uneven, or complicated with a straight-line approximation so it becomes easier to study, calculate, or describe. In other cases, it can mean arranging something into a single sequence or direct order. The word usually suggests simplification.

This use is most common in mathematics, physics, engineering, and related fields. If you have a curve on a graph, you might linearize it near a certain point by using the tangent line there. That gives you a local approximation: it tells you how the function behaves nearby, even if the full function is much more complicated. People do this when working with differential equations, control systems, economic models, and many other problems where an exact answer is harder to use than a simpler local one.

The word can also appear in computing and everyday technical writing. A programmer might talk about linearizing a tree or nested structure, meaning that it is turned into a flat, one-direction sequence. In statistics or data analysis, someone may linearize a relationship by transforming the data so it can be modeled more easily with linear methods.

An important detail is that linearization is often only an approximation. It works best for small changes or near the point where the straight-line version was created. Move too far away, and the simplified version may stop matching the original thing very well.
