A lifeguard is a trained and certified rescuer responsible for the safety of people in and around water. While often pictured on sandy beaches, lifeguards work in various aquatic environments, including swimming pools, water parks, lakes, and rivers. Their primary duty is preventive—constantly scanning the water to identify potential hazards and proactively intervening before an emergency occurs. This includes enforcing vital safety rules, such as prohibiting running on slippery decks or diving into shallow water.

However, a lifeguard's training goes far beyond rule enforcement. They are skilled in strong swimming, first aid, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and specialized rescue techniques using equipment like rescue buoys, tubes, and sometimes even powerboats or jet skis. When someone does get into trouble—whether they are struggling against a current, experiencing a medical emergency, or caught in a dangerous rip current—the lifeguard is trained to quickly assess the situation and perform a safe, effective rescue.

The term "lifeguard" can also be used figuratively. If someone consistently offers protection and guidance during challenging times, you might describe them as a "lifeguard" for that person. For example: "During her long recovery, her best friend was a true lifeguard, always there to pull her back to safety." This usage highlights the core essence of a lifeguard: a vigilant protector who steps in exactly when others are most vulnerable.
