The word "lefty" has a double life. In its most literal sense, it describes a person who is left-handed, meaning they naturally prefer the left hand for tasks like writing, throwing, or eating. In sports, especially baseball, this kind of player is also often called a "southpaw." Because of that, "lefty" can sound casual, familiar, and slightly playful when it refers to handedness.

The word also has a political meaning. This sense comes from the older idea of "the left" in politics, which goes back to the seating arrangements of the French Revolution, where people on the left side were linked with more radical or reform-minded views. From that tradition, "lefty" developed as an informal way to describe a person with liberal, progressive, or broadly left-wing political beliefs.

Today, the political meaning is common in everyday speech. Someone might say, "He's a bit of a lefty," or "That neighborhood is full of lefties." The tone depends a lot on context: it can be friendly, neutral, teasing, or dismissive. So the word may point either to which hand a person favors or to where they stand politically, and the intended meaning is usually clear from the conversation.
