koala

The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) is a marsupial mammal native to eastern and southeastern Australia. People often call it a "koala bear," but it is not a bear at all. Like other marsupials, it carries and raises its young in a pouch.

This animal lives mainly in eucalyptus woodlands and forests, where it finds both food and shelter. Its diet is made up mostly of eucalyptus leaves. Because these leaves are low in energy, hard to digest, and contain chemicals that many animals cannot handle, it spends long hours resting and has a digestive system that is well adapted to this food.

With its thick fur, large nose, and strong claws, it is well suited to life in trees. It usually moves slowly and spends much of the day sitting in branches, but it can climb well and travel when it needs a new tree. Even though it often looks gentle and cuddly, it is still a wild animal.

Koalas face serious threats from habitat loss, bushfires, drought, disease, and extreme heat. Because of this, they are an important focus of conservation work in Australia. When people think of Australian wildlife, this sleepy leaf-eater is often one of the first animals that comes to mind.
